Stumbling Stones
Stolpersteine laid in connection with Mecklenburg
481 Stumbling Stones documented
As part of his project "Stolpersteine", the artist Gunter Demnig has been laying so-called Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) since 1997, now across all of Europe, in memory of all who suffered injustice under National Socialism, at their last voluntarily chosen place of residence. In addition to those persecuted on "racial" grounds, such as Jews and Sinti and Roma, the undesirables are also commemorated -- those who did not fit the rulers' image because of their political views or sexual orientation. As the number of currently known Holocaust victims with a connection to Mecklenburg shows, the laid Stolpersteine currently cover only a fraction of them. In contrast to all other Mecklenburg towns, in Rostock, on public or private initiatives, the city lays its own gray memorial plaques in memory of victims of National Socialism.
The following list of 481 Stolpersteine or memorial plaques laid in Mecklenburg or elsewhere for people with a connection to Mecklenburg was compiled in the course of our own research, some of which was also conducted on site, but currently claims neither completeness nor accuracy. Further information, additions, or corrections are welcome.
